Clean as You Go: Simple 3 Minute Habits for a Neat Home

Oh, the joys of being a stay at home mom! Don’t get me wrong, I love spending all my time with my little one, but keeping a clean house is just so hard with a little one running around all the time. I used to be able to find the time to clean when I was working, but now it just seems impossible. I’m always needed by my little one, and finding time to clean has been a struggle. But I think I’ve found a solution that works for me.

I don’t want to spend all my time cleaning on the weekends when my husband is home, so I clean in small chunks of 3-5 minutes at a time. By focusing on tasks that can be completed in 3 minutes or less, I’m able to keep up with the cleaning throughout the week and not have to work as hard on the weekends.

Here’s a list of 3 minute cleaning tasks to help keep your weekend cleaning short and sweet!

Make your bed

I am the worst in the world at straightening the bed every day, but I have decided to let it go because it works. When the bed is straightened, everything is better. It takes very little time and it is so nice to curl up in a fresh, settled bed. Your bedroom, and even your house, will be a little tidier.

Throw in a load of laundry

I’m constantly doing laundry because we live in a camper and don’t have space for dirty clothes. It can be a lot of work, but I don’t mind because it helps me stay organized. Once we finish building our house, I don’t think I’ll go back to letting laundry piles build up. I don’t see the point in using clothes hampers anymore – if the clothes are there, I’ll just wash them! This way, I can keep on top of things and not have to worry about dirty laundry taking over.

Clear off a surface (and don’t put anything back!)

There’s something so satisfying about clearing off a cluttered surface, especially if it’s a spot where you tend to throw everything. I try to clean off at least one counter space each day and then make a conscious effort not to put things back. That can be tough, especially when you have a spouse who doesn’t seem to realize that items can have a home other than the countertop. But I love my husband, so I can’t stay mad at him for long!

Pick up toys

It’s a never-ending task, isn’t it? All day, every day. But I collect them because if I don’t, the camper will soon drown in a sea of fire trucks and police cars and monster trucks. It may only deter them for 30 minutes, but in that short time, my sanity has returned. I never went to bed without a tidy toy. It’s my way of starting over the next day.

Clean out old food in refrigerator

I would have to say that cleaning the refrigerator is one of my least favorite chores. To tell you the truth, I don’t exactly “clean” the refrigerator very regularly (please don’t criticize me for this), but at least once a week I will go in there and throw out old leftovers and anything that has passed its expiration date. It’s a simple operation, but it gives me the impression that I’ve “cleaned” my refrigerator!

Clean your toilet

Yay, toilet talk. Listen, none of us enjoy having to do it… It makes no difference to me how much simpler things have become as a result of the magic Clorox wand (and it has!). I make an effort to just get things done. In the bathroom, I don’t give any other concerns a second thought. When I finally get around to cleaning the bathroom, I won’t have to worry about the toilet because it will already be cleaned, and I’ll have more time to focus on more enjoyable tasks.

Wipe down mirrors.

I’m convinced they put those funhouse mirrors in my camper, y’all. I feel like I’ve gained 20 pounds every time I look at myself (hint: I HATE these mirrors with a passion!). BUT they still have to be cleaned and it’s a quick 3 minute cleaning task.

Clean your shower (while you’re in it)

Another one of my least favorite tasks. Having said that, it is highly recommended that you carry out the task while you’re in there. I’ll give it a quick spritz with some shower cleaner a few minutes before I enter the shower, and then I’ll scrub it when I get in. Don’t you love killing 2 birds with one stone?

 Wipe out your microwave

It makes me feel embarrassed to admit that I don’t do this nearly enough… but I’m saying it. If you stay on top of it, this is a simple task that requires very little cleaning and can be finished quickly. If you don’t allow it to accumulate for at least a couple of months…

Take out trash/throw away trash lying around

Sometimes I just go through our home and throw away/recycle all the trash lying around (water bottles, junk mail, paper plates, etc.). It can make a big difference!

Vacuum one room

Just one. You can do it! My all-time favorite vacuum is the Dyson V7. It’s cordless, has great suction…and lightweight!

Final thoughts

These are few examples of cleaning tasks that can be completed in just 3 minutes. By doing a few of these a couple times a day, I’ve been able to avoid having to do a big cleaning session on the weekends.

It’s a great tool for keeping clutter down and preventing you from feeling overwhelmed. It works best when you do it regularly, so consider doing a 3-minute “surface cleanse” every day for the rest of your life. It may seem like a small investment of time, but I think you’ll see it’s worth it when you see the results. You may even get addicted to this quick and easy cleaning habit!
